European Beech
Fagus sylvatica • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Straight, fine, even texture with a uniform and tight grain. Small, darker flecks (medullary rays) are visible as short, thin lines on the face grain, which is a classic diagnostic feature of Beech.
Color Description
Typically a pale straw or light pinkish-brown color. The sapwood is not clearly demarcated from heartwood. It can darken to a more golden-brown color with age or if steamed during processing.
Hardness Rating
1,300 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to Slightly Durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/outdoor conditions.
Common Uses
Furniture, flooring, cabinetry, tool handles, boat building (bent parts), veneer, and musical instruments (e.g., piano blocks). Popular for steam-bending applications.
Geographic Origin
Europe (Central and Western), also cultivated in parts of North America.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 - $9.00 per board foot
Wood Age Estimate
Modern/Recently cut sample; likely 0-5 years old based on the lack of significant UV oxidation and the fresh, clean appearance of the surface.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices and reported by the IUCN as being of least concern. Generally very sustainable and widely available with FSC certification.
Workability
Generally easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It has good machining qualities but can have high shrinkage, making it prone to movement. Glues and finishes well.
Notable Features
Lacks a distinctive odor. Noted for its excellent steam-bending properties and high resistance to splitting. The medullary rays appear as small silvery flecks on quarter-sawn surfaces.
Finish Recommendations
Responds well to all types of finishes including oil, polyurethane, lacquer, and wax. Staining can sometimes result in blotchiness, so a sealer/conditioner is recommended before staining.
Identification Confidence
High; the combination of the pale pinkish-tan color, very fine uniform texture, and the presence of small, distinct dark brown ray flecks is characteristic of Fagus sylvatica.
