European Beech

Fagus sylvaticaHardwood

European Beech

Grain Pattern

Straight, fine, and even texture with a uniform grain and a consistent cathedral figure when flat-sawn. Features small, distinct medullary rays that appear as tiny silver flecks or dark lines on radial surfaces.

Color Description

Typically a pale cream to light reddish-brown heartwood with little distinction from the sapwood. It darkens slightly to a golden tan with age and UV exposure. Steam-treated beech takes on a deeper pinkish-tan hue.

Hardness Rating

1,300 lbf (Hard)

Durability Rating

Non-durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/weathering. Rated as perishable with low resistance to termites.

Common Uses

Furniture (especially chairs and bentwood), flooring, cabinetry, tool handles, piano pinblocks, turning, brush handles, and food containers due to lack of odor/taste.

Geographic Origin

Europe, spanning from Southern Scandinavia to Northern Turkey and across to the United Kingdom.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

Approximately $6.00 – $10.00 per board foot depending on grade and region.

Wood Age Estimate

Freshly harvested log or branch, likely under 1-2 years old based on the presence of intact bark, fresh chippings nearby, and the absence of significant oxidation or drying cracks.

Sustainability Status

Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC certification common.

Workability

Excellent with both hand and machine tools. It glues, stains, and finishes well. It is specifically known for its superior steam-bending qualities, though it undergoes high shrinkage during drying.

Notable Features

Essentially odorless and tasteless. Heavy and strong with very high crush strength. Known for having visible medullary rays that appear as small flecks upon close inspection of the face grain.

Finish Recommendations

Takes all standard finishes well, including polyurethane, lacquer, and oils. Because it is somewhat plain, it is often dyed or stained to imitate more expensive woods like Walnut or Mahogany.

Identification Confidence

Medium-High. The smooth, greyish-tan bark texture with occasional lichen patches and the pale, uniform color of the fresh wood chips are characteristic of the Fagus genus (Beech).
