Ponderosa Pine

Pinus ponderosaSoftwood

Ponderosa Pine

Grain Pattern

Straight grain with a medium to coarse texture; narrow latewood bands visible in growth rings. Presence of resin canals and small knots characteristic of conifer logs.

Color Description

Heartwood is reddish-brown while sapwood is wide and creamy-yellow to pale orange. Significant color contrast at the pith. Darkens with UV exposure to a deeper amber.

Hardness Rating

460 lbf (Very Soft)

Durability Rating

Non-durable to Slightly Durable; heartwood has some rot resistance but sapwood is highly susceptible to decay, blue stain, and wood-boring insects.

Common Uses

Residential construction framing, paneling, trim, millwork, crates, and furniture (especially rustic styles).

Geographic Origin

Western North America, primarily the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$1.50 - $4.00 per board foot (lumber grade), though log value in yard is considerably lower per ton.

Wood Age Estimate

Freshly felled or recently cut (within months); based on the presence of bark, lack of deep silver weathering, and visible radial checking in the green log.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern (IUCN); widely available and not CITES protected. Heavily managed through sustainable forestry practices in the USA.

Workability

Easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Glues and finishes well, though high resin content can occasionally gum up blades or cause finish blotching.

Notable Features

Distinctive sweet, resinous scent; contains pitch pockets and large amounts of resin. Bark is thick and flaky, often described as 'puzzle-like' in older specimens.

Finish Recommendations

Requires a sealer or washcoat to prevent resin bleed; amenable to polyurethane, lacquer, or oil-based stains once seasoned.

Identification Confidence

High; identification based on gross anatomy of the log cross-section, bark texture, wide sapwood, and characteristic pith appearance consistent with western yellow pines.
