Hard Maple
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Closed, diffuse-porous grain with a subtle, fine texture. The veneer shows soft cathedral patterns and slight sweeping curves typical of flat-cut or rotary-cut lumber. Very occasional small bird's eye-like knots are present in the lower rail.
Color Description
Even light golden-brown to amber tone, likely aged naturally or finished with a honey-toned stain. Naturally, heartwood is a grayish reddish brown, but most cabinetry uses the lighter sapwood. It tends to yellow/golden with exposure to UV and age.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to Slightly Durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to high moisture.
Common Uses
Kitchen cabinetry, furniture, flooring (notably basketball courts/bowling alleys), musical instruments, and cutting boards.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America and the Great Lakes region.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 - $9.00 per board foot for 4/4 select grade lumber; cabinetry value is typically assessed by linear foot.
Wood Age Estimate
15-25 years based on the cabinetry style, hardware visible in background, and the oxidation of the finish into a warmer honey amber.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally sustainable.
Workability
Excellent with machine tools though its high density can cause burning with dull blades. It stains unpredictably (can be blotchy) without a wood conditioner. Glues and finishes well.
Notable Features
Known for its high density and abrasion resistance. Often produces a faint, sweet smell when being worked. Dust can be an irritant.
Finish Recommendations
Clear polyurethane or lacquer for durability in kitchen environments. Use of a pre-stain wood conditioner is highly recommended if re-staining to avoid blotchiness.
Identification Confidence
High. The fine, closed pore structure, distinctive amber aging of maple cabinetry from this era, and common use in residential millwork are telltale signs.
