European Beech
Fagus sylvatica • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Straight to slightly wavy; grain is fine and uniform with a conspicuous fleck pattern visible on quartersawn surfaces (medullary rays). Growth rings are distinct, showing a subtle cathedral pattern in flat-sawn sections.
Color Description
Pale cream color with a pinkish or golden-brown hue. Heartwood and sapwood are typically indistinguishable. Features small, darker reddish-brown pith rays that give the wood a signature 'flecked' appearance. Tends to darken slightly to a more yellowish-brown with age.
Hardness Rating
1,300 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/ground contact. Best suited for interior use unless specifically treated.
Common Uses
Furniture (especially chairs), cabinetry, flooring, boatbuilding (interior), musical instruments (piano pinblocks), tool handles, and turned objects.
Geographic Origin
Central and Western Europe; widely distributed in the UK, Germany, and France.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 to $10.00 per board foot depending on thickness and quality.
Wood Age Estimate
The sample appears relatively contemporary (less than 10 years old) based on its light color, lack of significant oxidation/patina, and clean machine-cut edges typical of modern millwork.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered highly sustainable with FSC certification common.
Workability
Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. It glues, finishes, and turns well. It is specifically known for its superb steam-bending properties.
Notable Features
Distinctive short, dark lines (medullary rays) visible on all surfaces; lacks a characteristic odor; high shrinkage rate makes it prone to movement if not properly seasoned.
Finish Recommendations
Takes all finishes well. Clear polyurethane or lacquer is recommended to maintain the natural light color, though it can be stained to mimic more expensive hardwoods like mahogany or walnut.
Identification Confidence
High; the combination of very fine grain, pale pink-cream color, and the highly specific short, brownish medullary ray flecks are diagnostic for the Fagus genus, particularly European Beech.
