Hardness Rating
950 lbf (Medium)
Durability Rating
Durable to Very Durable regarding heartwood decay resistance, though susceptible to insect attack.
Common Uses
Fine furniture, cabinetry, flooring, veneers, turned objects, and small specialty wood items.
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$5.00 - $8.00 per board foot depending on width and grade.
Wood Age Estimate
Freshly milled from kiln-dried stock, likely less than 1 year since processing based on the light pinkish hue and lack of UV oxidation.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and considered highly sustainable.
Workability
Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. Planes and glues well. The main challenge is a tendency to scorch/burn if router bits or saw blades are dull or feed speed is too slow.
Notable Features
Distinctive mild, aromatic scent when being worked. Known for its small black gum pockets (pith flecks) which are a natural characteristic of the species.
Finish Recommendations
Responds beautifully to oil-based finishes (like Tung or Linseed oil) which enhance the darkening process. Wiping varnish or shellac are also excellent choices. Avoid heavy stains as the wood is prone to blotching.
Identification Confidence
High; the combination of the light pinkish-tan color, the specific texture of the pores, and the presence of tell-tale dark gum streaks on the right side is diagnostic for Prunus serotina.
