Grain Pattern
Straight to irregular grain with a medium to fine uniform texture
Color & Appearance
Freshly cut wood is a dull brown, but upon exposure to UV light and air, it rapidly oxidizes to a vibrant, deep purple color. With further aging and prolonged light exposure, it darkens to a rich dark brown with a hint of purple.
Hardness (Janka)
2,520 lbf (Extremely Hard)
Durability & Decay Resistance
Very Durable. Excellent resistance to decay, rot, and dry-wood termites.
Value & Sustainability
- Estimated Market Value
- $10.00 to $18.00 per board foot
- Wood Age Estimate
- Estimated to be moderately aged (several years old), evidenced by the deep, rich purple oxidation showing it has completed its initial color shift.
- Sustainability Status
- Not listed on the CITES appendices or the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, but selective harvesting and responsible sourcing are recommended due to localized over-exploitation.
Common Uses
Fine furniture, heavy construction, flooring, boat building, turnery, cabinetry, and specialty items.
Geographic Origin
Central and South America (ranging from Mexico down to southern Brazil)
Workability
Difficult to work due to its extreme hardness and density. It tends to dull cutting edges quickly. Heating the wood can help with bending, and gluing can be tricky due to natural oils.
Finish Recommendations
Takes a fine polish, but oil-based finishes or clear lacquers/polyurethanes work well. A UV-inhibiting finish is recommended to slow down the eventual darkening process.
Notable Features
Exhibits a striking natural purple color upon exposure to light. Contains natural resins and oils that make it very weather-resistant, though it can cause allergic reactions and respiratory irritation from dust.
