Southern Yellow Pine (Pressure-Treated)
Pinus spp. (e.g., Pinus taeda, Pinus echinata) • Softwood

Grain Pattern
Straight, coarse-textured grain with prominent latewood bands forming a cathedral pattern around a tight knot. Flat-sawn orientation.
Color Description
Naturally yellowish-white to light brown; however, this sample shows a distinct greenish-yellow tint due to pressure treatment chemical impregnation. Will weather to gray over time if exposed to UV.
Hardness Rating
690 lbf (Soft)
Durability Rating
Very Durable (due to treatment). Treated SYP is exceptionally resistant to rot, termites, and fungal decay compared to its untreated state.
Common Uses
Outdoor construction, decking, fencing, pergolas, retaining walls, and framing for structures in contact with the ground.
Geographic Origin
Southeastern United States
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$1.00 - $1.50 per board foot (varies by dimension and treatment grade)
Wood Age Estimate
Modern (likely less than 1-2 years old). Surface is smooth with no significant oxidation or weathering, typical of new stock from a lumber yard.
Sustainability Status
Extremely Sustainable. Fast-growing, widely managed in plantations, and not listed on CITES or the IUCN Red List.
Workability
Very easy to work with hand and machine tools. Glues and finishes well once dry, though high moisture content in pressure-treated wood can cause warping as it dries.
Notable Features
Pungent resinous scent and chemical odor from pressure treatment. Contains copper-based preservatives (ACQ or MCA) which provide the green hue. Corrosive to standard fasteners; requires hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel hardware.
Finish Recommendations
Exterior-grade oil-based stain or water-repellent sealer. Must be allowed to dry completely (moisture content below 15%) before painting or staining.
Identification Confidence
High. The prominent latewood growth rings, presence of a central knot, and the tell-tale green tint of chemical pressure treatment are diagnostic for Southern Yellow Pine dimensional lumber.
