Balsa

Grain Pattern

Generally straight grain with a medium to coarse texture; diffuse-porous with large pores resulting in a fuzzy or open-grain surface appearance.

Color Description

Heartwood is pale reddish-brown to tan but is rarely seen since most commercial lumber is sapwood. Sapwood is an off-white or oatmeal color, sometimes with a yellowish or pinkish hue; high natural luster.

Hardness Rating

88 lbf (Very Soft); it is the softest commercial hardwood.

Durability Rating

Non-durable; highly susceptible to rot, decay, and insect attack. Not intended for outdoor use or exposure to moisture.

Common Uses

Model building (airplanes, boats), surfboards, insulation, specialized packing, flotation devices, movie props (breakaway furniture), and core material in composite structures.

Geographic Origin

Tropical South and Central America; major commercial production is centered in Ecuador.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$5.00 - $12.00 per board foot depending on density and grade; often sold by the piece in hobby shops at a higher equivalent rate.

Wood Age Estimate

Relatively recent/modern. The sample shows a fibrous, fresh-cut texture with minimal oxidation or patina development.

Sustainability Status

Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List. Widely available from sustainable plantation sources; fast-growing and renewable.

Workability

Easily worked with very sharp tools, but dull blades will crush and tear the fibers rather than cut them. Does not hold nails or screws well due to low density; glues well but is highly absorbent.

Notable Features

Extremely low density and weight; one of the lightest woods available. Excellent strength-to-weight ratio and superb buoyancy and acoustic/thermal insulation properties.

Finish Recommendations

Sanding sealer or grain filler is necessary due to high porosity. Takes finishes like lacquer or dope well, though it absorbs large amounts of liquid finishes.

Identification Confidence

High; the off-white color, distinctively large open vessel elements, fuzzy surface fibers, and hallmark lightweight appearance are diagnostic of Balsa wood.
