Eastern White Pine

Pinus strobusSoftwood

Eastern White Pine

Grain Pattern

Generally straight and even with a fine, uniform texture. This sample displays flat-sawn cathedral patterns on the left and tighter, vertical grain toward the right edge. Occasional small, tight knots are visible.

Color Description

Heartwood is a light brown with a slight reddish/yellowish hue; sapwood is a pale yellow to nearly white. This sample is very light, suggesting it has not yet undergone much light-induced darkening (ambering), which is common as it ages.

Hardness Rating

380 lbf (Very Soft)

Durability Rating

Low to non-durable; susceptible to decay and insect attack if left untreated or exposed to moisture.

Common Uses

Interior millwork, cabinetry, furniture (rustic or colonial styles), wood carvings, construction lumber, crates, and matchsticks.

Geographic Origin

Eastern North America (Eastern United States and Canada)

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$3.00 - $6.00 per board foot depending on grade and width.

Wood Age Estimate

Recently milled or sanded. The lack of oxidation (patina) and the presence of fresh sawdust on the surface indicate this is a new board or a freshly processed surface.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern (IUCN); widely available and not listed in CITES appendices; frequently available with FSC certification.

Workability

Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. It is very easy to plane and sand, though it is prone to indentation due to its softness. It glues and finishes well.

Notable Features

Distinctive resinous scent when worked. Very lightweight with low density. It has a tendency to bleed resin (pitch) if not kiln-dried properly.

Finish Recommendations

Takes most finishes well. A sanding sealer or pre-stain conditioner is highly recommended to prevent blotching if staining. Clear polyurethane or lacquer is common to preserve the light color.

Identification Confidence

High. The fine texture, specific cathedral grain transition, pale color, and small dark knots are classic indicators of Pinus strobus.
