Southern Yellow Pine
Pinus palustris (and other related species in the Pinus genus) • Softwood

Grain Pattern
Straight grain with distinct, uneven texture. Features flat-sawn cathedral patterns across the face. Occasional knots and resin pockets are visible. Typical commercial industrial cut with wane (missing wood/bark edges).
Color Description
Heartwood is reddish-brown; sapwood is yellowish-white. This sample shows significant gray/black fungal staining (sapstain) and weathering from outdoor exposure, reducing original luster.
Hardness Rating
690 lbf (Soft)
Durability Rating
Slightly Durable. Vulnerable to decay and insect attack if not pressure-treated, especially when in contact with the ground.
Common Uses
Pallets, shipping crates, construction framing, subflooring, heavy timbers, and utility poles.
Geographic Origin
Southeastern United States
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Minimal. As pallet-grade lumber, it is valued around $0.50 to $1.00 per board foot, often considered scrap or recycled material.
Wood Age Estimate
1-3 years since harvest. The wood shows signs of rapid oxidation, weathering, and mold growth typical of industrial use and outdoor storage.
Sustainability Status
Highly sustainable. Not listed by CITES or IUCN. Extensively grown on plantations and widely available with FSC/SFI certification.
Workability
Easy to moderately easy to work with. Can be resinous, which sticks to tools. Nailing and screwing are easy, but grain tear-out is common in lower-grade rough-cut boards.
Notable Features
Distinctive resinous scent when cut. High resin content makes it heavier and harder than many other softwoods. Presence of wane and blue stain is characteristic of utility-grade utility lumber.
Finish Recommendations
Generally not finished in this application. If repurposed, requires thorough sanding to remove mold/grime, followed by a film-forming finish like polyurethane or a penetrating exterior oil.
Identification Confidence
High. The grain structure, presence of latewood bands, wane, blue staining, and application as a shipping pallet are hallmark identifiers for Southern Yellow Pine.
