Hard Maple (Sugar Maple)

Grain Pattern

Primarily straight, tight grain with a fine, even texture. This flat-sawn sample shows characteristic cathedral peaking on the right side and very subtle growth ring transitions.

Color Description

Creamy off-white sapwood (which is the primary part used). Heartwood is typically reddish-brown. This sample shows excellent light luster and will slightly darken to a golden amber over time with UV exposure.

Hardness Rating

1,450 lbf (Hard)

Durability Rating

Non-durable to perishable; very susceptible to decay and insect attack if used outdoors or in high-moisture environments.

Common Uses

Flooring (especially basketball courts and bowling alleys), cabinetry, furniture, cutting boards, musical instruments (piano frames and guitar necks), and wooden spoons.

Geographic Origin

Northeastern North America and the Great Lakes region.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$6.00 – $9.00 per board foot (standard 4/4 S2S grade).

Wood Age Estimate

Contemporary / New; the lack of oxidation, surface patina, or wear suggests it is a modern, kiln-dried board likely processed within the last 1-5 years.

Sustainability Status

Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered highly sustainable and frequently FSC certified.

Workability

Fairly easy to work with machine tools, though it is prone to burning if router bits or saw blades are dull or if feed rates are too slow. Glues, turns, and finishes well.

Notable Features

High density and resistance to abrasion; lacks a distinctive scent; heavy weight; contains sugar-rich sap which can cause burning marks during machining.

Finish Recommendations

Takes all finishes well. Water-based polyurethanes are recommended to maintain the white color; oil-based finishes will immediately impart a yellow/amber cast.

Identification Confidence

High; the closed-grain structure, pale creamy color, and specific flat-sawn cathedral patterns are classic identifiers for North American Hard Maple.
