Western Red Cedar
Thuja plicata • Softwood

Grain Pattern
Straight, fine-textured grain with a prominent vertical/quartersawn orientation appearing as tightly spaced parallel lines; very uniform growth rings.
Color Description
Heartwood ranges from pinkish-red to a deep reddish-brown. Sapwood is yellowish-white. This sample shows a warm, reddish-brown patina likely deepened by oxidation and moderate light exposure.
Hardness Rating
350 lbf (Very Soft)
Durability Rating
Durable to Very Durable; excellent resistance to decay and rot due to high thujaplicin content; moderate resistance to insect attack.
Common Uses
Outdoor siding, decking, shingles, fence posts, greenhouse construction, boat building, sauna interiors, and musical instrument soundboards.
Geographic Origin
Pacific Northwest of North America (from Alaska to California and inland to Montana/British Columbia).
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $4.00 - $8.00 per board foot depending on grade (Clear Heart vs. Common).
Wood Age Estimate
Estimated 10-20 years based on surface oxidation and the depth of color; marks indicate a planed surface that has beginning signs of surface wear and dust accumulation.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC certification common.
Workability
Excellent with hand and machine tools; very easy to plane and sand but prone to denting and splintering because it is very brittle and soft. Holds nails and screws well but pre-drilling is recommended near edges.
Notable Features
Distinctive aromatic 'cedar' scent; contains natural oils that can cause allergic reactions in some; exceptionally lightweight and dimensionally stable with low shrinkage.
Finish Recommendations
Penetrating oils or transparent stains are best for outdoor use; polyurethane or clear lacquer for indoor use. Avoid heavy film-forming finishes for exterior high-moisture areas.
Identification Confidence
High; the tight growth rings, reddish hue, and characteristic longitudinal tracheid texture are classic markers of Old Growth Western Red Cedar.
