European Beech

Fagus sylvaticaHardwood

European Beech

Grain Pattern

Straight with a fine, even texture. Notable broad medullary rays visible as small reddish-brown flecks on the tangential surface (silvery grain) and distinct lines on the radial surface.

Color Description

Pale cream to pinkish-brown heartwood. Sapwood is not typically distinct from heartwood. Color darkens slightly with age and steam treating can turn it a more golden-tan. Moderate luster.

Hardness Rating

1,300 lbf (Hard)

Durability Rating

Non-durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/ground contact. Highly perishable.

Common Uses

Furniture frames, flooring, cabinetry, tool handles, turned objects, veneer, musical instruments (piano blocks), and plywood. Frequently used for interior bentwood furniture.

Geographic Origin

Europe, specifically Central and Western Europe, and parts of Western Asia.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$6.00 - $9.00 per board foot for high-grade dimensional lumber.

Wood Age Estimate

Freshly harvested or green (less than 1 year). Visible checked surface cracks suggest rapid drying of a green log.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern (IUCN). Widely available and frequently FSC-certified. Not listed in CITES Appendices.

Workability

Excellent overall; turns, glues, and finishes well. Very easy to work with hand and machine tools, though it has a high shrinkage rate which can lead to warping or checking if not dried carefully.

Notable Features

Lacks a distinctive odor. Known for outstanding steam-bending properties. Contains small, darker dashes known as 'pith flecks' or broad rays that are characteristic of the species.

Finish Recommendations

Takes all finishes well including oils, polyurethane, and wax. Clear coats are recommended to highlight the uniform texture and ray flecks.

Identification Confidence

High. The presence of the short, dark brownish dashed medullary rays against a pale creamy-pink background, combined with the way the wood has checked (split) during drying, is diagnostic for European Beech.
