Desert Ironwood

Olneya tesotaExotic/Hardwood

Desert Ironwood

Grain Pattern

Interlocked and irregular; fine texture with occasional wavy or burl figure in natural branch sections. Growth rings are very narrow and often indistinct.

Color Description

Heartwood is a rich dark brown to blackish, often with yellow or orange-red streaks. Sapwood is a thin, pale yellow. It deepens and darkens with age and exposure to light.

Hardness Rating

3,260 lbf (Extremely Hard)

Durability Rating

Very Durable; extremely resistant to rot and insect attack. One of the most stable and decay-resistant woods known.

Common Uses

Knife handles, carvings, small turnings, decorative containers, and jewelry. Too difficult and small for traditional furniture.

Geographic Origin

Sonoran Desert (Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico)

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

Highly expensive; typically sold by the pound rather than board foot, ranging from $15 to $50 per pound depending on figure.

Wood Age Estimate

The sample appears to be from a harvested dead-standing tree, likely aged 50-200 years based on size and typical slow growth rates.

Sustainability Status

Protected species in certain regions (Arizona/Mexico); harvesting is strictly regulated. Not currently CITES listed but considered vulnerable due to slow growth.

Workability

Difficult due to extreme density. Dulls cutters very rapidly; requires carbide tooling. Sands and polishes to a high natural luster without the need for fillers.

Notable Features

Extremely heavy (sinks in water); has a distinct, slightly unpleasant nutty scent when worked. High oil content makes it naturally water-resistant.

Finish Recommendations

Best left natural or finished with light wax or buffing oil. The wood is so dense that film-forming finishes like polyurethane often fail to adhere.

Identification Confidence

High; the combination of small-diameter branch stock, extreme density indicated by the checking (cracks), chocolate-brown color, and context as a carving base is diagnostic of Olneya tesota.
