Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

Approximately $3.50 to $6.00 per board foot depending on region and width (the listing price of $45 for a 1x14x9' board represents roughly $4.28 per board foot).

Wood Age Estimate

Freshly milled (0-1 months). The image shows the boards 'fresh out of the saw mill' with still-moist surfaces and bright, unoxidized fiber colors.

Sustainability Status

Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally managed sustainably in North America. FSC certified options are common.

Workability

Excellent results with machine tools; however, it can be prone to splintering. It has a high shrinkage rate and relatively high dimensional instability. Glues, stains, and finishes very well.

Notable Features

Distinctive 'vinegary' scent when being worked. Contains high levels of tannins which can cause dark staining if the wood comes into contact with iron and water.

Finish Recommendations

Accepts stains and finishes very easily. Polyurethane or lacquer are recommended for durability. Open-pore filling is required if a glass-smooth surface is desired.

Identification Confidence

High. The visual grain structure, visible large pores, pinkish hue, and the seller's specific description/measurements strongly confirm Quercus rubra.
