Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)

Non-durable to perishable; very susceptible to decay and insect attack if left in outdoor conditions.

Flooring (gymnasiums/basketball courts), butcher blocks, cabinetry, furniture, bowling pins, pool cues, and musical instruments.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America (United States and Canada)
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 - $9.00 per board foot
Wood Age Estimate
Modern processing (0-5 years); surface shows fresh planer marks and minimal oxidation or patina.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and FSC certified sources are common.
Workability
Fairly easy to work with machine tools but susceptible to burning if blades are dull or feed rate is too slow. Turns, glues, and finishes well.
Notable Features
Known for its high density and abrasion resistance; provides excellent acoustic properties for percussion and stringed instruments.
Finish Recommendations
Clear water-based polyurethanes are recommended to prevent yellowing; oil-based finishes will create a warm amber glow. Blotching can occur, so a wood conditioner may be used.
Identification Confidence
High; the combination of very light color, tight grain, small dark bark/mineral spots, and the specific luster is characteristic of Acer saccharum.
