410 lbf (Very Soft)
Durability Rating
Non-durable; rated as perishable regarding decay resistance and susceptible to insect attack.

Wood carving, Venetian blinds, shutters, inner furniture components, boxes, veneer, and musical instrument bodies (electric guitar bodies).
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $4.00 - $6.00 per board foot depending on thickness and quality.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively young/recently milled; the lack of graying or deep patina and the sharpness of the surface texture suggest the sample is likely less than 5 years old.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC certification common.
Workability
Exceptional workability with both hand and machine tools. It is one of the best woods for carving due to its softness and uniform density. Glues and finishes well, though it can be somewhat absorbent and may require a sealer.
Notable Features
Virtually odorless and tasteless. It is favored by carvers because it resists splitting and has very little grain directionality to fight against.
Finish Recommendations
Takes stains and finishes well, but most users prefer clear shellac, lacquer, or water-based polyurethanes to preserve its light color. Wood conditioner is recommended if staining to avoid blotchiness.
Identification Confidence
Medium-High; the extremely uniform, pale color combined with the lack of visible pore structure and very soft appearance are classic hallmarks of Tilia americana.
