Hard Maple (Sugar Maple)
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight grain, though it can be wavy. This sample shows a flat-sawn cathedral pattern toward the bottom with fine, uniform texture and small reddish-brown pith flecks visible.
Color Description
Creamy white to light reddish brown sapwood with a fine luster. Unlike most woods where heartwood is preferred, the white sapwood of Maple is highly prized. It tends to yellow slightly with age and UV exposure.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to perishable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/ground contact.
Common Uses
Flooring (basketball courts/bowling alleys), kitchen cabinetry, butcher blocks, furniture, musical instruments, and tool handles.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America (United States and Canada)
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 - $10.00 per board foot depending on figure and grade.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively young or freshly processed lumber, evidenced by the lack of significant oxidation, minimal surface wear, and bright, clean coloration.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC certification common.
Workability
Fairly easy to work with machine tools but difficult with hand tools due to density. Prone to burning when using high-speed cutters (routers/saws) and can experience tearout on figured sections. Glues and finishes well.
Notable Features
Known for its 'sugar' content which can cause charring during machining. It has excellent acoustic properties and high resistance to abrasion.
Finish Recommendations
Water-based polyurethanes are recommended to prevent yellowing; oil-based finishes will amber the wood. Takes stain well, though a pre-stain conditioner is advised to prevent blotchiness.
Identification Confidence
High; the closed pore structure, creamy white color, specific pith flecks, and cathedral grain patterns are classic diagnostic features of Acer saccharum.
