Sugar Maple
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight grain with a fine, even texture. This sample shows subtle rift-sawn characteristic with very slight wavy figure and visible ray fleck (pith flecks) typical of the Acer genus.
Color Description
Heartwood is a light reddish-brown, though this sample appears to be mostly sapwood, which is a creamy off-white with golden hues. Maple tends to yellow significantly over time with UV exposure. Low to medium luster.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable; rated as perishable regarding decay resistance and susceptible to insect attack, particularly the common furniture beetle.
Common Uses
Flooring (basketball courts/bowling alleys), furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments (violins and guitars), cutting boards, and tool handles.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America (United States and Canada).
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 to $10.00 per board foot depending on grade and figuring.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively new stock, likely harvested within the last 5-10 years. Minimal oxidation or patina is present on the surface.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC certification common.
Workability
Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools, though it has a high risk of burning when machined with dull high-speed steel bits or blades. Glues and finishes well, though staining can be blotchy.
Notable Features
Produces a distinct sweet scent when worked; high sugar content makes it prone to burning; excellent acoustic properties; can cause skin irritation or respiratory issues in some individuals.
Finish Recommendations
Water-based polyurethanes help maintain the white color. If a traditional look is desired, use shellac or wipe-on oil. Pre-stain conditioner is mandatory if using dark stains to prevent blotchiness.
Identification Confidence
High. The creamy color, fine pore structure, and characteristic small brown medullary rays/pith flecks are definitive markers for North American Hard Maple species.
