Hard Maple (Sugar Maple)
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight, but may be wavy. Surface shows a fine, even texture with a tight cathedral-patterned face grain. No bird's eye or curly figure is visible in this specific board.
Color Description
Predominantly cream to off-white sapwood (which is the primary commercial part of the tree used). Heartwood is a darker reddish-brown. The sample shows high luster under light and will likely age to a golden-yellow patina.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to perishable; very susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/ground contact.
Common Uses
Flooring (basketball courts, bowling alleys), cabinetry, furniture, cutting boards, tool handles, and musical instruments (guitar necks).
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 - $9.00 per board foot for Select/FAS grade
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively recent/contemporary material, likely processed within the last 1-5 years based on the lack of oxidation, absence of graying, and clean dimensional planning.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally managed sustainably through FSC certification sources.
Workability
Excellent with machine tools; turns, glues, and finishes well. Can be difficult with hand tools due to high density; prone to burning if saw blades are dull or feed speed is too slow.
Notable Features
High resistance to abrasion and wear; produces a sweet scent when worked; dust is a known sensitizer but not highly toxic.
Finish Recommendations
Water-based polyurethane is recommended to maintain the white color. Oil-based finishes will significantly yellow the wood over time. Pre-stain conditioner is required if staining to avoid blotchiness.
Identification Confidence
High; the tight grain, creamy-white color, and characteristic light-colored growth ring transitions are diagnostic for North American Hard Maple.
