White Oak (Stained/Distressed)

Quercus albaHardwood

White Oak (Stained/Distressed)

Grain Pattern

Straight to slightly wavy grain with prominent large pores; shows characteristic oak cathedral patterns and visible ray flecks in quarter-sawn areas; includes intentional distressing like wire-brushing and chatter marks.

Color Description

Heartwood is naturally light to medium brown, but this sample shows a medium-to-dark 'Golden Oak' or 'Gunstock' stain. It has a low-to-medium luster and will likely amber or slightly darken over time due to UV exposure.

Hardness Rating

1,360 lbf (Hard)

Durability Rating

Very Durable; excellent resistance to rot and decay due to tyloses in the heartwood pores which make it nearly water-tight.

Common Uses

Flooring (as seen in the image), cabinetry, high-end furniture, barrel making (cooperage), boat building, and interior trim.

Geographic Origin

Eastern Northern America

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$6.00 to $10.00 per square foot (installed flooring price)

Wood Age Estimate

Modern production (post-2010); the distressing is factory-applied to mimic age, but the uniform beveled edges and finish indicate recent engineered or solid strip flooring.

Sustainability Status

Highly sustainable; not CITES listed and widely available with FSC certification; considered a 'Least Concern' species by IUCN.

Workability

Excellent with both hand and machine tools; however, it has a high shrinkage rate and reacts with iron (turning black) if moisture is present. Gluing and finishing are generally easy.

Notable Features

Distinctive tannic smell when cut; very high tannin content; possesses tyloses which prevent liquid passage through pores, unlike Red Oak.

Finish Recommendations

Polyurethane or aluminum oxide factory finishes for flooring; benefits from oil-based stains to highlight the grain and 'heavy' grain fillers if a smooth surface is desired.

Identification Confidence

High (based on the prominent open-pore structure, visible ray flecks, and typical 'cathedral' grain common to Quercus species used in pre-finished flooring).
