Western Red Cedar

Thuja plicataSoftwood

Western Red Cedar

Grain Pattern

Generally straight grain with a medium to coarse texture. Flat-sawn boards show characteristic V-shaped cathedral patterns across the face. The growth rings are distinct and well-defined.

Color Description

Fresh heartwood ranges from reddish to pinkish brown, while sapwood is nearly white. As seen in the image, the wood weathers to a uniform silvery-grey when exposed to UV light and moisture. A protected strip shows the underlying original yellowish-brown oxidation.

Hardness Rating

350 lbf (Very Soft)

Durability Rating

Durable to Very Durable. Specifically resistant to rot and decay due to high concentrations of thujaplicins and water-soluble phenols. Moderately resistant to insect attack.

Common Uses

Outdoor decking, siding (shingles and shakes), fencing, exterior trim, boat building, and saunas.

Geographic Origin

Pacific Northwest of North America (British Columbia to Northern California)

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$4.50 - $7.50 per board foot depending on grade (Clear Heart vs. STK/Select Tight Knot)

Wood Age Estimate

10 to 15 years based on the heavy silver-grey patina, surface checking, and lichen/moss growth on the boards, which indicates a lack of recent sealer application.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern (IUCN); widely available with FSC certification; highly sustainable due to large-scale managed forestry in its native region.

Workability

Very easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It is prone to denting and scratching due to softness. It holds screws and nails well, though stainless steel fasteners are required to prevent black tannin staining.

Notable Features

Distinctive pungent, aromatic scent (cedar chest smell). Contains natural oils that act as preservatives. Low density and high thermal insulation properties. Can cause respiratory irritation or allergic reactions in some users.

Finish Recommendations

Penetrating oil-based stains are best for decks to maintain color. Solid-color stains or transparent UV-inhibitors are also common. Requires thorough cleaning and brightening prior to refinishing due to existing grey oxidation.

Identification Confidence

High. The weathering pattern, cathedral grain on flat-sawn decking boards, use-case for an exterior deck, and aromatic appearance are characteristic of Thuja plicata.
