White Oak
Quercus alba • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Straight to somewhat wavy grain with a coarse, uneven texture. Exhibits characteristic cathedral patterns on the flat-sawn face and a significant presence of large, open pores. Knot clusters suggest a rustic grade.
Color Description
Light to medium brown heartwood, often with an olive cast. Sapwood is nearly white to light brown and is not always sharply demarcated. The color typically darkens slightly with age to a more amber tone.
Hardness Rating
1,360 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Very Durable; excellent resistance to rot and decay. Tyloses in the pores make it nearly liquid-impermeable, often used for barrel making.
Common Uses
Furniture, flooring, cabinetry, boatbuilding, barrels (cooperage), interior trim, and heavy construction.
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 to $9.00 per board foot depending on region and grade.
Wood Age Estimate
Freshly milled to recent (less than 1 year). The wood shows minimal oxidation or graying, and the surface shows mill marks consistent with recent processing.
Sustainability Status
Not CITES listed and classified on the IUCN Red List as a species of least concern. FSC certified lumber is widely available.
Workability
Works well with both hand and machine tools. Has a moderate dulling effect on cutters. Glues, stains, and finishes well. Reacts with iron (turning blue/black) if the wood is wet.
Notable Features
Characteristic 'oaky' scent when being worked. High tannin content makes it susceptible to iron staining. Extremely strong and rot-resistant.
Finish Recommendations
Responds well to oil-based stains, polyurethane, and wax. If staining, a pre-conditioner can help manage the large pores. Penetrating oils highlight the grain beautifully.
Identification Confidence
High. The prominent cathedral grain, pore structure, and olive-tan coloration are classic indicators of Quercus alba. The presence of smaller knots and the specific tan-cast are consistent with Eastern North American White Oak.
