Hard Maple (Sugar Maple)
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight and fine, showing a subtle cathedral figure on this flat-sawn face. Exhibits small, dark mineral streaks (pith flecks) typical of the species.
Color Description
Primarily creamy off-white sapwood with a slight reddish-brown tinge. The heartwood is darker reddish-brown. It is known to develop a golden amber patina over time with UV exposure.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture/outdoor conditions.
Common Uses
Flooring (basketball courts/bowling alleys), cabinetry, furniture, musical instruments, cutting boards, and tool handles.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America (Canada and Eastern USA).
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $7.00 to $10.00 per board foot depending on grade and region.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively fresh milled stock (less than 1-2 years), indicated by the bright, pale color and lack of deep oxidation or graying.
Sustainability Status
Highly sustainable: not CITES listed and classified by IUCN as Least Concern. Readily available with FSC certification.
Workability
Fairly easy to work, though high density can lead to burning with high-speed machine tools. Glues and finishes well, though it can be difficult to stain evenly without a pre-conditioner.
Notable Features
High density and abrasion resistance; provides excellent acoustic resonance; dust can be a sensitizer for some users.
Finish Recommendations
Water-based polyurethanes help preserve the white color; shellac or oils (tung/linseed) will enhance the figure but yellow the wood faster.
Identification Confidence
High; the creamy color, tight grain texture, and characteristic dark mineral streaks/pith flecks are diagnostic for Acer saccharum.
