Red Oak
Quercus rubra • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Prominent, coarse, ring-porous grain with classic cathedral patterns on flat-sawn faces. Occasional slightly interlocked or wavy sections are visible; textured large pores create a distinct tactile grain.
Color Description
Medium reddish-brown heartwood with amber-gold staining. Modern clear finishes highlight the warm orange-red undertones. Sapwood is typically lighter/thinner, though these planks appear stained to a uniform warm honey-amber tone.
Hardness Rating
1,290 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Slightly durable to Non-durable; low resistance to rot and decay compared to White Oak. Poor resistance to moisture penetration due to open tyloses.
Common Uses
Residential flooring, cabinetry, furniture, interior millwork, doors, and veneer.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$4.50 - $6.50 per board foot for select grade lumber; $3.00 - $8.00 per square foot for pre-finished flooring.
Wood Age Estimate
Estimated as a 10-20 year old installation; showing moderate surface wear, micro-scratches in the polyurethane topcoat, and slight darkening from UV exposure.
Sustainability Status
Least Concern (IUCN); widely available and harvested sustainably across North America; commonly FSC certified.
Workability
Excellent with both hand and machine tools. Planes and sands well, but large pores can cause splintering or tearout on cross-grains. Glues and finishes easily, though it requires a grain filler for a perfectly smooth surface.
Notable Features
Distinctive acidic scent when freshly cut; high tannin content; large open pores (unlike White Oak which has clogged pores); known for its strength and shock resistance.
Finish Recommendations
Oil-based polyurethane is recommended for warmth and depth; water-based poly used for a clearer look. Penetrating oils work well but may require multiple coats due to high porosity.
Identification Confidence
High; the large, open-pored ring-porous structure combined with cathedral grain and distinct reddish-amber staining is characteristic of flat-sawn Red Oak flooring.
