Radiata Pine (Monterey Pine)
Pinus radiata • Softwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight with a medium to coarse texture. Flat-sawn surface shows wide, distinct growth rings and occasional small knots. Occasional uneven grain transition between earlywood and latewood.
Color Description
Heartwood is light brown to yellowish; sapwood is wide and pale yellowish-white. Shows a low to medium luster and typically darkens to a more amber/yellow hue over time with light exposure.
Hardness Rating
710 lbf (Soft)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to slightly durable; very susceptible to decay and insect attack if not treated. High permeability makes it excellent for preservative treatments.
Common Uses
Light construction, furniture, cabinetry, molding, trim, plywood, wood turning, and crates/pallets. Extremely common as a general-purpose utility wood.
Geographic Origin
Native to a small area of coastal California; extensively grown in plantations in New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and South Africa.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$2.50 - $5.00 per board foot depending on grade and regional availability.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively young lumber, likely kiln-dried and harvested within the last 2-5 years. Shows characteristic light oxidation of contemporary industrial lumber.
Sustainability Status
Highly sustainable. While native stands are limited, it is the most widely globally planted pine species and is frequently FSC certified.
Workability
Easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Glues and finishes well, though its resin content can occasionally clog sandpaper or cause paint blotchiness without a sealer.
Notable Features
Faint resinous odor when worked. Relatively lightweight but provides a decent strength-to-weight ratio for a soft wood.
Finish Recommendations
Clear lacquer or polyurethane works well; if staining, a pre-stain wood conditioner is highly recommended to prevent blotching due to uneven absorption rates.
Identification Confidence
Medium-High. The color palette, wide growth rings, and specific knot structure are hallmarks of plantation-grown Radiata Pine often found in big-box stores.
