Sugar Maple (Curly/Tiger Maple)

Grain Pattern

Strong curly or 'tiger' figure, featuring wavy horizontal grain that creates a washboard appearance. The primary grain is straight but undulating, appearing as ripples or chatoyancy when light hits it.

Color Description

Creamy white to light reddish-brown heartwood with pale sapwood. This sample shows high luster/chatoyance. It typically yellows or darkens to a golden amber hue with age and UV exposure.

Hardness Rating

1,450 lbf (Hard)

Durability Rating

Non-durable to perishable; very susceptible to decay and insect attack if exposed to moisture.

Common Uses

Musical instruments (violins, guitars), high-end furniture, cabinetry, flooring, cutting boards, and decorative veneers.

Geographic Origin

Northeastern North America (United States and Canada)

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$10.00 to $25.00 per board foot depending on the intensity of the figure.

Wood Age Estimate

Relatively recent/kiln-dried modern stock; the lack of deep oxidation or graying suggests it is likely less than 5-10 years post-milling.

Sustainability Status

Not listed on CITES or IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC options.

Workability

Generally works well, but figured grain is highly prone to tearout during planing and jointing. Sharp tools and light passes are required. Glues and finishes excellently.

Notable Features

Highly prized for its chatoyant visual effect (the 'fiddleback' effect). It has high density and excellent acoustic properties. Known for the production of maple syrup.

Finish Recommendations

Dye stains are often used to 'pop' the figure, followed by clear coats of nitrocellulose lacquer, shellac, or high-gloss polyurethane to enhance depth.

Identification Confidence

High; the distinct horizontal wavy figure combined with the light color and fine, closed-pore texture is characteristic of figured Acer saccharum.
