Rainbow Poplar (Tulip Poplar)
Liriodendron tulipifera • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Straight, diffuse-porous grain with a fine to medium texture. Shows a subtle cathedral figure and some rift-sawn characteristic in specific sections. The grain is generally uniform and unremarkable until color staining occurs.
Color Description
Creamy white to yellowish sapwood. The heartwood is characterized by a unique 'rainbow' of colors including green, purple, black, and mineral streaks. With exposure to UV light, the vibrant greens and purples typically fade to a uniform brown or dark grey over time.
Hardness Rating
540 lbf (Soft)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to Slightly Durable. Susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture; intended for interior use only.
Common Uses
Secondary wood for furniture (drawer sides), paint-grade cabinetry, moulding, trim, picture frames, pallets, and upholstered furniture frames. The 'rainbow' variety is often used for decorative crafts and turned bowls.
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$2.50 - $5.00 per board foot depending on the intensity of the mineral staining and local availability.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively fresh lumber, likely less than 1-2 years post-milling. The colors are still vibrant and have not yet oxidized to the typical dull brown associated with aged poplar.
Sustainability Status
Highly sustainable. Not listed on CITES or the IUCN Red List; widely available and fast-growing.
Workability
Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. It is very easy to plane and sand, though it can be 'fuzzy' if tools are not sharp. It glues and finishes well, though it is notoriously difficult to stain evenly without a pre-conditioner.
Notable Features
Faint, pleasant scent when worked; very lightweight for a hardwood. The 'Rainbow' streaks are actually mineral stains caused by the tree absorbing various elements from the soil through its root system.
Finish Recommendations
Clear coat such as polyurethane, lacquer, or water-based acrylic to preserve the internal colors as long as possible. UV-inhibiting finishes are highly recommended to slow the inevitable browning of the green and purple streaks.
Identification Confidence
High. The distinct greenish-grey mineral streaks combined with the creamy sapwood and smooth, diffuse-porous texture are definitive characteristics of Liriodendron tulipifera (Rainbow Poplar).
