Olivewood

Olea europaeaExotic/Tropical Hardwood

Olivewood

Grain Pattern

Highly irregular and swirled with distinct concentric circles from end-grain cuts; exhibits interlocked and wavy patterns with significant figure including burl-like clusters and small knots.

Color Description

Heartwood is a creamy yellowish-brown with darker brown and black contrasting streaks and swirls. It has a high natural luster and develops a deeper, richer amber patina with age and light exposure.

Hardness Rating

2,710 lbf (Extremely Hard)

Durability Rating

Moderately Durable; susceptible to insect attack in the wild, but very resistant to decay in indoor environments. High density provides natural resistance to wear.

Common Uses

Luxury flooring (specifically end-grain blocks), high-end cabinetry, knife handles, bowls, turned objects, specialty furniture, and small decorative items.

Geographic Origin

Mediterranean Basin (Southern Europe, North Africa, and Middle East)

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$15.00 - $25.00 per board foot; higher for select end-grain decorative blocks.

Wood Age Estimate

Based on the depth of the amber patina, heavy surface scratches, and wear in the finish, the installation appears to be 30 to 50 years old.

Sustainability Status

Not listed on CITES Appendices or the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, though old-growth trees are protected in many Mediterranean countries.

Workability

Challenging due to extreme hardness and high density. Can cause significant dulling of cutting edges. Glues and finishes well but requires sharp tools to avoid tearout on irregular grain.

Notable Features

Distinctive pleasant, sweet scent when worked; very oily feel due to natural oil content; extremely heavy and fine-textured.

Finish Recommendations

Penetrating oils or wax are excellent to highlight the grain; polyurethane or lacquer can be used for flooring but may require degreasing because of natural oils.

Identification Confidence

High; the distinct 'target-like' concentric growth rings of end-grain Olivewood combined with its characteristic yellowish-brown color and dark streaks are definitive.
