Southern Yellow Pine (Pressure-Treated)

Pinus spp. (likely Pinus palustris, P. echinata, P. taeda, or P. elliottii)Softwood

Southern Yellow Pine (Pressure-Treated)

Grain Pattern

Straight, coarse grain with prominent uneven growth rings; flat-sawn displaying typical cathedral patterns and narrow latewood bands.

Color Description

Heartwood is reddish-brown while sapwood is yellowish-white. The dominant greenish tint is due to Chromium Copper Arsenate (CCA) or Micronized Copper Azole (MCA) pressure treatment. It will weather to a silvery gray if left unfinished.

Hardness Rating

690 lbf (Soft)

Durability Rating

Very Durable (Treated). While the raw timber is non-durable, the pressure treatment provides high resistance to rot, fungal decay, and termites.

Common Uses

Decking, fencing, outdoor framing, landscaping, retaining walls, and sill plates.

Geographic Origin

Southeastern United States.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$1.20 - $1.80 per linear foot (for 2x4 dimensional lumber).

Wood Age Estimate

New (under 1 year). The wood shows fresh dimensional lumber stamps, sharp factory edges, and the vibrant green hue of recent chemical treatment.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern (IUCN). Widely available from sustainable secondary-growth forests in the US; FSC and SFI certified options are common.

Workability

Easy to work with power tools; can be gummy due to high resin content. High moisture from treatment can cause warping during drying. Avoid inhaling dust from treated lumber.

Notable Features

Distinctive resinous scent, heavy weight when wet with treatment chemicals, and identifies as 'treated lumber' via the green chemical staining. High tannin content can corrode standard steel fasteners.

Finish Recommendations

Exterior-grade semi-transparent stain or water sealant. Use specialized deck stains. Must wait until moisture content is below 15% before painting or staining.

Identification Confidence

High. The prominent growth rings, dimensional milling (2x4), and the specific green tint from chemical pressure treatment are diagnostic of Southern Yellow Pine lumber for exterior use.
