Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $12.00 to $18.00 per board foot for select grade lumber.
Wood Age Estimate
The sample appears to be finished millwork approximately 5-15 years old, based on the even oxidation and modern sheen of the topcoat.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in the CITES Appendices and reported as a species of least concern by the IUCN. Widely available and sustainably managed.
Workability
Generally easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It planes smoothly and glues well. It is an excellent wood for carving and turning, though its dust can be a mild irritant.
Notable Features
Distinctive mild, spicy scent when worked. Contains juglone, which can be toxic to certain plants. Known for exceptional dimensional stability and finishing qualities.
Finish Recommendations
Oil-based finishes or clear lacquers are recommended to enhance the natural depth of the grain. Polyurethane provides excellent durability for high-touch surfaces like this panel.
Identification Confidence
High; the deep chocolate color tones combined with the specific pore structure and cathedral grain pattern on the flat-sawn paneling are hallmarks of domestic Black Walnut.
