Hard Maple (Sugar Maple)
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight grain with a fine, even texture. This sample appears to be flat-sawn with faint growth ring patterns and small reddish-brown pith flecks visible.
Color Description
Creamy white to light reddish brown. The heartwood is typically darker, but this sample appears to be mostly sapwood, which is the prized part of Maple. It has a high luster and will age to a golden yellow over time.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to perishable; very susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture.
Common Uses
Flooring (basketball courts and bowling alleys), kitchen cabinetry, butcher blocks, furniture, musical instruments, and tool handles.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America and the Great Lakes region.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $7.00 - $12.00 per board foot depending on grade and region.
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively young/recently milled (0-2 years) based on the bright, pale color and lack of significant UV oxidation (yellowing).
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and considered sustainable with many FSC-certified sources.
Workability
Fairly easy to work with machine tools but difficult with hand tools due to its density. It is prone to burning if saw blades or router bits are dull. Glues, turns, and finishes well.
Notable Features
Often contains small flecks known as 'sugar streaks.' Can occasionally cause skin irritation or respiratory issues in sensitive individuals due to fine dust.
Finish Recommendations
Water-based polyurethane is recommended to keep the wood white. Oil-based finishes will instantly turn it a warmer yellow/amber. Blotching can occur, so a wood conditioner or gel stain is suggested if staining.
Identification Confidence
High; the tight grain, pale creamy color, visible vessel arrangement, and characteristic small brown pith flecks are diagnostic for Acer saccharum.
