Western Red Cedar

Thuja plicataSoftwood

Western Red Cedar

Grain Pattern

Straight grain with a coarse texture. Flat-sawn boards show prominent cathedral patterns near knots and tight, linear growth rings in other areas. Small, round sound knots and some checking are visible.

Color Description

Heartwood ranges from pinkish-red to dull brown. This sample shows a weathered brown/darkened coffee patina common in older outdoor structures or treated lumber. Sapwood is typically narrow and yellowish-white.

Hardness Rating

350 lbf (Very Soft)

Durability Rating

Durable to Very Durable. Higher resistance to rot and decay than most softwoods due to natural thujaplicins (extractives). Susceptible to insect attack if not treated.

Common Uses

Outdoor decking, fencing, siding, shingles, greenhouse construction, boat building, and saunas.

Geographic Origin

Pacific Northwest of North America (British Columbia to Northern California).

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$4.00 - $6.00 per board foot (standard decking grade).

Wood Age Estimate

5 to 10 years. Surface shows weathering, minor splitting (checking) around fastners, and a dark brown stain/sealant that is starting to fade and allow silvering underneath.

Sustainability Status

Generally sustainable; IUCN Least Concern. Widely available with FSC certification. Not CITES listed.

Workability

Very easy to work with hand and machine tools. Planes and sands easily, though it is prone to denting and scratching due to softness. Holds glue well but has poor nail-holding power compared to hardwoods.

Notable Features

Distinctive cedar aroma when cut. Contains natural oils that resist humidity. High tannin content can cause blue/black staining if it comes into contact with non-stainless fasteners (iron/steel).

Finish Recommendations

Semi-transparent oil-based stains are best for decking to protect against UV and moisture while allowing the grain to show. Solid stains or wood bleaches are alternatives for older wood.

Identification Confidence

High. The grain structure, presence of small sound knots, characteristic checking patterns, and its use as a multi-plank outdoor deck with square-drive deck screws are quintessential indicators of Western Red Cedar.
