White Oak

Quercus albaHardwood

White Oak

Grain Pattern

Straight textured with a coarse, uneven feel. The board shows a flat-sawn or cathedral grain pattern at the bottom with tight, parallel rift-sawn grain towards the top. Large rays are visible as small flecks.

Color Description

Light to medium brown with an olive cast; sapwood is much lighter cream color. This sample appears freshly surfaced and very light, which will darken to a golden brown over time with UV exposure.

Hardness Rating

1,360 lbf (Hard)

Durability Rating

Very Durable; highly resistant to rot and decay due to tyloses in the pores that make the wood nearly liquid-tight. Often used for boatbuilding and barrels.

Common Uses

Furniture, flooring, cabinetry, boatbuilding, barrels (cooperage), trim, and tool handles.

Geographic Origin

Eastern United States and Southeastern Canada.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$6.00 - $10.00 per board foot depending on region and grade.

Wood Age Estimate

Freshly milled/surfaced lumber, likely less than 1-2 years since harvest based on the lack of oxidation and very light color.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern on IUCN Red List; widely available and generally sustainable with FSC certification common.

Workability

Good workability with machine and hand tools. It has a high shrinkage rate, which can lead to poor dimensional stability if not dried properly. Reacts with iron (rust) and can cause staining if wet.

Notable Features

Distinctive tannic scent when cut. High tannin content can cause dark stains when in contact with iron. Highly prized for its ability to hold liquids.

Finish Recommendations

Responds excellently to oil-based finishes, polyurethane, and wax. Stains can sometimes be blotchy; a sanding sealer is recommended if using dark pigments. Fuming with ammonia is a traditional method to darken this species.

Identification Confidence

High; the visible open pores, characteristic olive-tan color, cathedral grain transition, and presence of medullary rays are definitive for the White Oak group.
