European Beech
Fagus sylvatica • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Straight grain with a fine, even texture. While the log is currently in the round, the face grain typically exhibits a characteristic fleck pattern (pith rays) when quarter-sawn.
Color Description
Heartwood is typically a pale cream to light reddish-brown, often darkening over time. The sapwood is not clearly demarcated from heartwood. The log shows a dark 'false heart' in the center, likely due to incipient decay or fungal staining commonly found in older beech logs.
Hardness Rating
1,300 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to Slightly Durable; highly susceptible to insect attack and fungal rot if left in damp conditions.
Common Uses
Furniture (especially steam-bent chairs), flooring, cabinetry, tool handles, workbenches, kitchen utensils, and high-quality firewood.
Geographic Origin
Native to Europe, including the United Kingdom, growing extensively across Western and Central Europe.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
£3.00 - £6.00 per board foot (standard grade); as raw firewood or green turning rounds, significantly less.
Wood Age Estimate
The branch/log section is approximately 15-25 years old based on ring density; the specimen itself appears recently cut (within months) due to the fresh color of the wood and attached moss/lichen.
Sustainability Status
Not listed by CITES or IUCN Red List. Categorized as Least Concern. Generally very sustainable with high FSC/PEFC availability in the UK.
Workability
Generally works well with both hand and machine tools, though it has a high shrinkage rate. Excellent for steam bending and turning. Can be prone to burning if saws are dull.
Notable Features
Neutral odor. Known for excellent shock resistance and the presence of 'False Heartwood' (dark centered stain). High susceptibility to movement with humidity changes.
Finish Recommendations
Takes finishes well. Polyurethane or lacquer are common for floors/furniture; food-grade mineral oil is recommended for beech kitchen utensils.
Identification Confidence
High. The thin, smooth grey bark with green lichen, the uniform light-tan end grain, and the specific 'false heart' stain are classic diagnostic features of European Beech found in Northern England.
