White Pine
Pinus strobus • Softwood

Grain Pattern
Straight, moderately fine, and even-textured grain with a flat-sawn cathedral pattern visible in lower sections; relatively narrow growth rings showing subtle latewood transitions.
Color Description
Creamy white to pale yellowish-brown heartwood. Sapwood is nearly white. It possesses a low, natural lackluster sheen and tends to darken to a golden yellow or deep amber with age and sunlight exposure.
Hardness Rating
380 lbf (Very Soft)
Durability Rating
Low durability; rated as non-durable to slightly durable regarding decay resistance. Susceptible to insect attack and rot if used in outdoor, damp conditions without treatment.
Common Uses
Light construction, interior trim, window sashes, cabinetry, pattern making, carving, crates, and furniture (especially rustic or farmhouse styles).
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America, ranging from Newfoundland to the Great Lakes and south through the Appalachian Mountains.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$3.00 to $6.00 per board foot depending on grade (Common vs. Select) and region.
Wood Age Estimate
Estimated wood age is 5-15 years based on the lack of deep oxidation or heavy patina, though the surface shows some recent mechanical wear and staining.
Sustainability Status
Not listed on CITES Appendices or the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally managed sustainably with FSC certification commonly available.
Workability
Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. Cuts and planes easily, though its softness makes it prone to denting and crushing. Glues and finishes well, though it can exhibit blotchiness when stained.
Notable Features
Faint, resinous pine scent. Very lightweight. Contains small amounts of resin that can clog sandpaper. Low toxicity, though dust can be a mild respiratory irritant.
Finish Recommendations
Clear polyurethane or lacquer for protection. If staining, a pre-stain wood conditioner is highly recommended to prevent uneven absorption and blotching.
Identification Confidence
High; the pale color, distinct softwood latewood lines, presence of small pitch-like streaks, and general texture are characteristic of Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus).
