Southern Yellow Pine (Shortleaf/Longleaf group)

Pinus echinata / Pinus palustrisSoftwood

Southern Yellow Pine (Shortleaf/Longleaf group)

Grain Pattern

Straight, coarse grain with incredibly distinct, wide latewood bands (growth rings); flat-sawn orientation showing prominent cathedral-like patterns and some splintering.

Color Description

Heartwood is reddish-brown or yellowish-orange; sapwood is yellowish-white. Shows high contrast between the lighter earlywood and darker, denser latewood which darkens significantly with UV exposure.

Hardness Rating

690-870 lbf (Soft to Medium-Soft classification)

Durability Rating

Moderately Durable; heartwood contains natural resins that offer some resistance to decay, but it is susceptible to rot and insect attack if not pressure-treated for outdoor use.

Common Uses

Residential construction, heavy framing, sub-flooring, decking, utility poles, and rustic furniture.

Geographic Origin

Southeastern United States

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$1.50 - $3.00 per board foot (Standard dimensional lumber price)

Wood Age Estimate

Estimated 20-40 years old based on the thickness of growth rings and the moderate oxidation of the surface resin.

Sustainability Status

Highly sustainable; not CITES listed or on the IUCN Red List. Widely available and managed in intensive forestry plantations.

Workability

Generally easy to work with machines, though the high resin content can gum up saw blades and sandpaper. Nails and screws hold well, but pre-drilling is recommended near edges to prevent splitting.

Notable Features

Distinctive resinous, turpentinic scent; very heavy and strong for a softwood; high split potential along growth rings.

Finish Recommendations

Penetrating oil or polyurethane. High resin content may require wiping with mineral spirits before staining or painting to ensure even adhesion.

Identification Confidence

High; the wide, dark latewood bands and yellowish earlywood are diagnostic for Southern Yellow Pine, along with the visible resin canals.
