Eastern White Pine
Pinus strobus • Softwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight and uniform grain with a medium-to-coarse texture. The sample shows a flat-sawn face with prominent knots and some interlocked/irregular fibers around the knotty areas.
Color Description
Heartwood is light brown or cream with reddish-brown streaks, while sapwood is pale yellow to white. This sample exhibits a light, creamy-tan hue with very little color variance between earlywood and latewood. It will darken or 'pumpkin' to a golden yellow with age and UV exposure.
Hardness Rating
380 lbf (Very Soft)
Durability Rating
Slightly Durable to Non-durable. It has low resistance to rot and insect attack, requiring treatment for outdoor exposure.
Common Uses
Utility lumber, interior millwork, furniture, crates, boxes, boat building (masts), and carving.
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America (Eastern Canada and Northeastern/Great Lakes regions of the United States).
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$2.00 to $5.00 per board foot depending on grade (this knotty grade is lower value).
Wood Age Estimate
Relatively young or freshly milled. The lack of significant 'pumpkin' oxidation or surface patina suggests the timber was harvested and processed within the last 1-3 years.
Sustainability Status
Least Concern (IUCN); widely available as FSC certified; sustainable due to rapid growth and extensive management in its native range.
Workability
Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. It saws cleanly and planes easily, though the soft fibers can 'crush' if tools are not extremely sharp. Gluing and finishing are straightforward.
Notable Features
Distinctive resinous scent when cut. Very lightweight with low density. The knots present in this sample are typical of 'common' grades and can be prone to bleeding resin through finishes.
Finish Recommendations
Film-building finishes like polyurethane or lacquer work well; however, a shellac-based sealer is often required over knots to prevent resin bleed (tannin staining).
Identification Confidence
High. The color palette, lack of distinct latewood contrast, presence of tight knots, and general texture are classic hallmarks of Northern/Eastern White Pine.
