White Oak
Quercus alba • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Straight, coarse grain with a flat-sawn cathedral pattern visible on the face; features long, prominent rays and large, open pores typical of the white oak group.
Color Description
Natural heartwood is light to medium brown, but this sample has a dark espresso or walnut-colored stain. It displays a medium luster through the finish, with visible pore fill variation typical of ring-porous woods.
Hardness Rating
1,360 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Very Durable; high tannin content provides excellent resistance to rot, decay, and insects. Frequently used for exterior applications.
Common Uses
Furniture, flooring, cabinetry, barrel making (cooperage), boat building, and architectural millwork/mantels.
Geographic Origin
Eastern North America
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 to $12.00 per board foot depending on width and grade.
Wood Age Estimate
The wood appears to be relatively modern (10-30 years) but has been intentionally distressed with a hand-planed or 'scalloped' adze-cut textured edge to mimic an antique hand-hewn look.
Sustainability Status
Sustainable; widely available, not CITES listed, and classified as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN. FSC certified options are commonly available.
Workability
General workability is good, though it has high shrinkage. It responds well to steam bending and glues well. The high density can dull blades faster than softer hardwoods.
Notable Features
Distinctive 'white oak' scent when freshly cut; contains high tannin levels which can react with iron to create black stains; pores are clogged with tyloses making it liquid-tight.
Finish Recommendations
Takes stains well (as seen in the dark chocolate finish). Polyurethane or lacquer is recommended for mantels to protect against heat and soot. Use a sanding sealer to manage the open grain.
Identification Confidence
High; the visible pore structure, ray fleck characteristics, and the way the stain has taken to the latewood/earlywood vessels are classic diagnostic features of the Quercus genus, specifically the white oak group.
