Yellow Poplar (Tulipwood)

Liriodendron tulipiferaHardwood

Yellow Poplar (Tulipwood)

Grain Pattern

Straight, fine-textured grain with a relatively uniform, subtle pattern. Exhibits diffuse-porous characteristics with minimal figure, though occasionally shows faint cathedral patterns in flat-sawn boards.

Color Description

Light cream to yellowish-brown heartwood, often with characteristic streaks of grey or green. Sapwood is pale off-white to yellowish. Darkens to a more uniform tan/brown upon prolonged exposure to UV light.

Hardness Rating

540 lbf (Soft)

Durability Rating

Non-durable to slightly durable; susceptible to insect attack and rot if exposed to moisture or ground contact.

Common Uses

Light construction, furniture frames, cabinetry (paint-grade), interior trim, plywood, crates, and turned objects.

Geographic Origin

Eastern North America (Eastern United States and Southern Ontario)

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$2.50 - $4.50 per board foot depending on grade and region.

Wood Age Estimate

5-15 years based on modern milling patterns and relatively low level of oxidation/patina development.

Sustainability Status

Least Concern (IUCN); widely available and not CITES listed. Considered a highly sustainable, fast-growing domestic hardwood.

Workability

Excellent workability with both hand and machine tools. Planes easily, glues well, and takes paint exceptionally well. Can be fuzzy when sanding if paper is dull; easy to nail without splitting.

Notable Features

Faint, pleasant scent when being worked; known for being the 'workhorse' of American hardwoods. Contains low levels of natural oils, making it ideal for painted finishes.

Finish Recommendations

Primarily recommended for paint-grade applications. If stained, use a pre-stain conditioner to prevent blotchiness. Water-based or oil-based polyurethanes work well for clear coats.

Identification Confidence

High; the combination of the fine, closed grain, light yellowish-brown hue with subtle greenish undertones, and the visible 'paint-grade' texture is diagnostic of Liriodendron tulipifera.
