Hard Maple (Sugar Maple)
Acer saccharum • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Generally straight grain with a fine, even texture. Shows occasional light wavy figures and subtle cathedral patterns on the face-sawn surfaces. Characteristic small brownish pith flecks are visible in several areas.
Color Description
Heartwood is a light to medium reddish brown; sapwood (which comprises the majority of the board) is a pale cream to off-white. The surface shows light ambering consistent with UV exposure and age.
Hardness Rating
1,450 lbf (Hard)
Durability Rating
Non-durable to Perishable; low resistance to rot and insect attack, though very resistant to abrasion and wear.
Common Uses
Cutting boards, flooring (especially basketball courts and bowling alleys), furniture, cabinetry, veneer, and musical instruments (guitar necks).
Geographic Origin
Northeastern North America (United States and Canada).
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 to $10.00 per board foot depending on grade and regional availability.
Wood Age Estimate
Approximately 3 to 7 years. The wood shows significant knife marks and surface scratches consistent with regular kitchen use, plus light oxidation.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List; widely available and generally considered sustainable with FSC certification common.
Workability
Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools, though its high density can lead to burning with high-speed cutters (bits/blades). Glues, turns, and finishes well.
Notable Features
Produces a distinct sweet smell when worked. Known for its high density and closed-pore structure, making it ideal for food-safe surfaces as it resists bacteria penetration.
Finish Recommendations
Food-grade mineral oil or a beeswax/oil blend (butcher block conditioner). For non-food use, polyurethane or lacquer are standard.
Identification Confidence
High. The fine texture, presence of pith flecks, pale sapwood color, and application (a high-quality cutting board) are classic indicators of Sugar Maple.
