Europe, ranging from southern Scandinavia to central and southern Europe.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
$6.00 to $9.00 per board foot
Wood Age Estimate
20-40 years, based on the oxidation of the finish and the style of the wood marking/ruler construction.
Sustainability Status
Least Concern (IUCN). Generally considered highly sustainable due to abundance in Europe; FSC and PEFC certification frequently available.
Workability
Excellent. Works very well with hand and machine tools. It glues, stains, and finishes exceptionally well. It is also excellent for steam bending.
Notable Features
Essentially odorless. High susceptibility to movement with humidity changes (high shrinkage). Notable for its smooth, uniform surface that takes fine detail well.
Finish Recommendations
Polyurethane or lacquer are best for durability. Oil-based finishes will enhance the warm pinkish tones, while water-based finishes will keep it looking pale.
Identification Confidence
High. The uniform color, fine texture, and highly distinctive dark medullary ray flecks are classic indicators of European Beech, especially common in vintage tools and rulers.
