Paulownia (Imperial Tree)
Paulownia tomentosa • Hardwood

Grain Pattern
Strong cathedral grain figure visible on the flat-sawn face; typically straight with a very coarse, porous texture similar to ash or oak but significantly lighter.
Color Description
Pale grayish-white to light blonde. The heartwood is often a silvery grey or light brown, and the wood does not darken significantly with age but may develop a yellowish patina.
Hardness Rating
Approximately 260-300 lbf; classified as Very Soft (softer than most softwoods despite being a hardwood).
Durability Rating
Durable to Very Durable regarding rot resistance; however, it is susceptible to insect attack and physical denting due to low density.
Common Uses
Surfboards (Alia), musical instruments (Koto), carvings, light furniture, veneer, crates, and boat interiors where weight is a primary factor.
Geographic Origin
Native to East Asia (China); extensively cultivated in North America and Australia.
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $4.00 - $8.00 per board foot depending on grade and availability.
Wood Age Estimate
Recently milled or kiln-dried based on the bright color, lack of oxidation, and fresh fuzzy surface fibers from sanding/planing.
Sustainability Status
Not listed in CITES appendices or IUCN Red List; considered an invasive species in parts of North America, making it a sustainable/ecologically friendly choice.
Workability
Excellent. Easy to work with hand and machine tools; saws and planes easily but is prone to fuzzy surfaces if tools aren't sharp; glues and finishes well.
Notable Features
Extremely lightweight (one of the lightest known hardwoods); high strength-to-weight ratio; high ignition point; low thermal conductivity.
Finish Recommendations
Light oils or water-based polyurethanes to preserve the pale color. Requires sanding to high grits to remove 'fuzzing' common in low-density hardwoods.
Identification Confidence
High; the combination of prominent wide-ringed cathedral grain, extremely pale color, and characteristic coarse porous texture are classic markers of Paulownia.
