Geographic Origin
Central Africa (primarily Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea)
Market Value & Sustainability
Estimated Market Value
Approximately $25.00 to $40.00 per board foot depending on thickness and width.
Wood Age Estimate
Sample appears to be modern, kiln-dried stock with minimal patina or oxidation.
Sustainability Status
Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to a population reduction of over 50% in the last three generations. Not CITES listed but regulated in source countries.
Workability
Difficult to work with hand and machine tools due to high density and blunting effect on cutters. Sanding can result in deep scratches; dust is a known irritant and allergen.
Notable Features
Identifiable by its weight (dense), lack of distinct odor, and high oil content. The wood is naturally resistant to impact and abrasion.
Finish Recommendations
Penetrating oils or matte polyurethane are recommended to highlight dark figure. High-gloss finishes can be difficult due to the large, open pores which may require filling.
Identification Confidence
High. The distinctive dark chocolate color with contrasting black streaks and very coarse, open-pored grain is a signature characteristic of Millettia laurentii.
