Black and White Ebony (Pale Moon Ebony)

Diospyros malabaricaExotic/Tropical Hardwood

Black and White Ebony (Pale Moon Ebony)

Grain Pattern

Straight to slightly interlocked grain with a fine, uniform texture; distinctive for its stark, ink-like black streaks against a pale background.

Color Description

Heartwood features a pale yellow or white background with dramatic black or dark brown streaks and patches. It has a high natural luster and the black areas may expand slightly over time with oxidation.

Hardness Rating

Approx. 1,200 lbf (Hard); however, it is dense and brittle compared to other Ebony species which can exceed 3000 lbf.

Durability Rating

Moderately Durable to Durable; generally resistant to rot though rarely used in exterior applications due to high cost and aesthetic value.

Common Uses

Turning, inlay, musical instrument components (guitar fretboards), high-end cabinetry, knife handles, and decorative veneers.

Geographic Origin

Southeast Asia, primarily Laos and Thailand.

Market Value & Sustainability

Estimated Market Value

$75.00 - $120.00 per board foot; often sold by the piece/turning blank rather than board footage.

Wood Age Estimate

The sample appears to be modern, kiln-dried stock based on the sharp machine-cut edges and lack of significant surface oxidation or UV graying.

Sustainability Status

Not currently CITES listed, but like most Diospyros species, it is considered vulnerable due to slow growth and high demand; availability is limited.

Workability

Difficult to work; very dense and prone to splintering or checking. Has a high dulling effect on cutters. Glues well but requires pre-drilling for fasteners.

Notable Features

Distinctive high-contrast 'ink-wash' appearance; very heavy and sinks in water; dust can be an irritant to skin and respiratory tract.

Finish Recommendations

Takes a high polish; clear oils or wax are recommended to highlight the natural contrast without yellowing the white areas. CA glue is often used as a grain filler in turning.

Identification Confidence

High; the dramatic, irregular black streaking on a pale cream background is a unique diagnostic feature of Pale Moon Ebony.
