How to Identify Brazilian Cedar

Lead with the nose and the heft. Brazilian Cedar's single most diagnostic feature is its warm, spicy, cedar-like aroma, which is strongest on a fresh cut and persists for years — if a light, tan-to-reddish tropical board smells sweetly aromatic, that alone narrows the field dramatically. Pair that with weight: the wood is genuinely light and soft, feels far lighter than true mahogany or most reddish tropical hardwoods, and a thumbnail presses into it easily. Together, aromatic-and-light is the fast field test.
Now read color and rings. This species runs from the pale honey-brown to tan of the sample through pinkish-brown to a deeper reddish-brown, over a lighter, poorly demarcated sapwood, and it darkens with age. Look for the distinct growth rings: Cedrela is ring-porous to semi-ring-porous, so each ring is marked by a band of larger earlywood pores, producing the clear ring lines and subtle ray pattern seen here. That visible pore-lined ring is a key tell — it is a hardwood pore structure, which immediately rules out any true conifer 'cedar.'
Check the end grain to confirm. You should see open pores concentrated toward the earlywood of each ring (ring/semi-ring-porous), rays that are fine and low-contrast, and often gum or resin in the pores. Because conifers such as Western red cedar and the aromatic junipers ('aromatic red cedar') have no pores at all — only resin canals and a very different, lighter, fibrous feel — any pored end grain rules them out even though the smell can be similar.
The common confusions fall into two camps. First, the true 'cedars' (Cedrus, Thuja/Western red cedar, and Juniperus): these share an aromatic scent but are non-porous softwoods, usually lighter, more brittle or splintery, and often more colorful or streaky — the pored, mahogany-like structure of Spanish Cedar sets it apart. Second, the mahoganies (Swietenia) and African mahogany (Khaya), its botanical relatives: these look similar in color and grain but are heavier, harder, and not strongly aromatic. When a board is light, soft, distinctly aromatic, reddish-to-honey brown, and shows pore-lined growth rings, Brazilian Cedar (Spanish Cedar) is the likely answer.
