Free online wood identification, explained
- Is the online wood identifier really free?
- Yes. You can identify wood from this page with no account and no download. The free result is the most likely species, its wood type, and a rough market value range. The full report, with grain, hardness, durability, uses, workability, and finishing advice, is in the Wood Identifier app.
- How accurate is AI wood identification from a photo?
- It is a strong first guess, not a lab test. Many species look alike, especially once stained or finished, and a photo cannot show weight, hardness, or the pore structure of the end grain. Treat the result as a starting point and verify important identifications with an end-grain check under a hand lens or a wood scientist.
- What kind of photo works best?
- Natural daylight, a plain background, the grain filling most of the frame, and a sharp focus on the surface. A freshly cut or unfinished face shows the true color, and a clean end-grain shot is the most telling view of all.
- Can it identify engineered wood, veneer, and bamboo?
- Yes. Solid lumber, logs, firewood, driftwood, veneer, furniture, flooring, turned and carved pieces, plywood, MDF, reclaimed wood, and bamboo are all in scope. Plastic laminates and printed imitation woodgrain are flagged as not wood.
