How to Identify Elm

Start with color and figure. Elm heartwood is a warm light golden-tan to pale or reddish-brown (as on this sample), over a paler creamy sapwood, so most boards show a moderate light-to-mid-brown field. The clearest visual clue is the figure: elm is strongly ring-porous, and on flatsawn faces the earlywood pore bands trace a distinctive irregular, wavy, cross-firing pattern — often called 'partridge breast' — that wanders and loops rather than running in straight parallel lines. If a light-brown board shows a bold, restless, wavy grain that seems to change direction, elm is a strong candidate.
Check the end grain. Elm is ring-porous with a row of large earlywood pores at each ring boundary, but unlike oak or ash the latewood pores are arranged in wavy, wandering, often concentric or zig-zag bands rather than radial rays or straight lines — a diagnostic feature under a lens. The rays are fine and inconspicuous, so elm does not throw the big, bright ray fleck that oak shows on quartered faces. That absence of coarse ray fleck, combined with wavy latewood pore bands, separates elm from oak immediately.
Feel the weight and grain. Elm is medium in weight and hardness — noticeably tougher and denser than the softwoods but lighter and softer than oak — and it resists splitting stubbornly when you try to cleave it, a hands-on trait almost unique to elm. The interlocked grain often makes a planed surface a little woolly or fuzzy rather than glassy. Elm has no strong characteristic scent when dry, though some pieces carry a faintly unpleasant, cattle-shed odor when freshly cut or wet.
The usual confusions are with ash, oak, and sweet chestnut. Ash is also ring-porous and pale, but ash is lighter in color (creamy blond), has a straighter, cleaner grain, and its latewood pores are fewer and not arranged in the wavy, wandering bands elm shows — ash also splits easily where elm does not. Oak is ruled out fast by its large, conspicuous ray flecks on quartered surfaces and its straighter figure; elm lacks that fleck. Sweet chestnut resembles oak without the ray fleck and can look similar to elm in color, but chestnut's growth-ring pattern is straighter and more oak-like, without elm's characteristic wavy cross-firing latewood pores. When in doubt, the combination of wavy partridge-breast figure, no coarse ray fleck, and stubborn resistance to splitting is what pins the wood as elm.
