Start with the rings. The most reliable clue to Gray Mangrove is the concentric banding on our sample — repeated darker rings running through a pale tan ground. Unlike normal annual rings, these are formed by successive cambia: the tree lays down alternating concentric layers of xylem and soft included phloem. On a clean end-grain cut under a lens you can often see the soft, sometimes darker phloem bands sandwiched between the harder wood layers, which is essentially unique among common timbers and points strongly to Avicennia.
Read the color. The wood is pale tan to light grayish-brown with little heartwood/sapwood contrast, so it reads as a uniform light wood crossed by darker rings rather than a two-tone board. There is no bright or richly colored heartwood to speak of — a strongly colored core would rule mangrove out.
Use weight and hardness to confirm. For such a small tree the wood is notably heavy and hard, so a dense, solid feel in a light-colored, ringed piece supports the identification. Try the soft bands: the wood can be split or picked apart along the phloem layers more easily than a solid hardwood of the same weight, and it tends to check along those lines — a behavior most ordinary hardwoods do not show. There is no strong characteristic scent; a fresh cut may carry a faint salty or slightly sour smell, especially in beach-collected wood.
Consider look-alikes. Other mangroves are the closest confusion. True mangroves of the genus Rhizophora (red mangroves) are typically darker, reddish, and denser, and lack the concentric included-phloem banding. The American White Mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) shares the 'white mangrove' name in some regions but is a different species without Avicennia's ringed structure. Among general pale, ringed hardwoods, ordinary ring-porous woods like ash or elm can superficially resemble the banding, but those show a clear porous-vs-dense annual ring under a lens rather than alternating wood and soft phloem tissue, and they do not split along concentric soft layers. When in doubt, the successive-cambia rings are the decisive tell.
